From simply providing new passports to helping fly relatives to hospital bedsides far away, the Department of Foreign Affairs has had a busy year.
In one of the most high-profile cases of the year, the department provided assistance to the four Halawa siblings who were detained in Egypt in August. Sisters Fatima (23), Somaia (28) and Omaima (21) have since returned home but their brother Ibrihim (17) is still in custody.
Officials from Dublin also provided help for the family of Michaella McCollum Connolly who is facing a six-year sentence in a Peruvian prison over a drugs charge.
Another tragic case the department dealt with was the death of 22-year-old Darragh Walsh, from Co Mayo, who was killed in a road accident in Qatar.
