MORE than 2,500 unemployed graduates and school-leavers are battling it out for a career in the Army.
For the 27 cadetship posts on offer in the Defence Forces, 2,537 applications were received -- with 1,000 lodged in the past week alone.
There were at least 94 applications for every position on offer, including 718 applications for the two pilot positions in the Air Corps, 1,444 for 20 Army posts and 375 for five Navy jobs.
Defence chiefs have noted an increase in the number of graduates applying for posts since the economic downturn took hold.
There is a rigorous screening process for the posts, with applicants put through their paces to test their fitness, aptitude for the job, communication skills, discipline and their ability to act under pressure.
