80 gardai hunt killers of shot drug addict

GARDAI were last night continuing to hunt for the killers who shot a drug addict and dumped his body in a shallow grave.

Up to 80 officers are involved in the investigation into the murder of Lee Slattery (24) whose body was found in a shallow grave on the outskirts of Limerick city on Monday.

Gardai believe the young father may have been murdered by criminals from the Moyross area of the city over an outstanding drugs debt. The suspected culprits are associated to senior members of the McCarthy-Dundon criminal gang who are heavily involved in the drugs trade across the Mid-West region.

The victim, who has drugs and theft convictions, suffered at least three gunshot wounds including one to the head.

House-to-house inquiries were ongoing in the Moyross and Ballynanty areas of Limerick yesterday as gardai attempt to trace Slattery's last movements. He was last seen last Thursday in his home neighbourhood and was reported missing by his father on Saturday.

A garda spokesman said investigating officers were getting "good co-operation" from the local community.
