THE family of an Irish girl who dreams of being able to walk thanks to pioneering US surgery are "totally overcome" after reaching their €60,000 fundraising target.
Katie Byrne (7) required the money for special surgery at a Missouri hospital, which will allow her to walk normally.
Her parents, Robert and Antoinette, thanked Irish Independent readers for a flood of donations after her story was featured in this newspaper.
The couple, from Coolock and Stepaside in Dublin but who live in Cobh, Co Cork, believe Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) will transform their daughter's life. Katie is scheduled to undergo the procedure on October 23.
