A NEW government-backed education initiative is offering 6,000 free part-time higher education places, writes Luke Byrne.
The Springboard programme has been set up to provide re-training opportunities to jobseekers. The Department of Education has invested €23m in the programme, and the Irish Independent is its media partner.
There will be 200 Springboard courses provided at 38 institutes of technology, universities and privately run higher education colleges.
The courses will target skills that are in demand in the jobs market, such as technology, languages, financial services and business start-up.
To be eligible for a place on a Springboard course, an applicant must be unemployed and actively seeking employment.
Applications are through a central online system: springboardcourses.ie. Potential applicants can call freephone 1800 303 523 for more information.
