50 jobs to be created at new tourism website

A TOTAL of 50 new jobs are to be created this year in a new tourism booking website.

The majority of the jobs at DayToursWorld.com will be based at Farranfore in Co Kerry, with some in a sub-office in Dublin.

The new site will offer people the opportunity to plan and book day trips and excursions in any country in the world.

Two Kerry entrepreneurs are behind the venture, Cathal O'Connell of Paddywagon Tours and Stephen O'Sullivan of Splash Design, based in Farranfore. The jobs will include administration and operations personnel as well as positions in sales and technical support.

Cathal O'Connell said he hoped recruitment would begin soon, with the venture having already secured €300,000 from Enterprise Ireland.

Meanwhile, a farmers' co-op has closed six of its branches and put 30 staff on short term layoff as part of a major restructuring of its business which will see it getting out of the retail business .

Wexford Farmers Co-Operative Society, which has stores, oil and marts divisions, said the continuing downturn in retail trading had led to a review of the society's operations.
