POST office manager Tony O'Reilly is believed to have been gambling up to €40,000 every day – more than his annual salary.
During the course of his sentencing, Wexford Circuit Court heard he had placed a single bet of €40,000 on the Norwegian women's soccer team – a gamble that failed when they lost.
Operating a 'Tony Ten' account at Paddy Power, his gambling took on a global nature with O'Reilly particularly losing the run of himself in the final weeks.
He placed €5,000 on Russian tennis ace Maria Sharapova – ranked 2nd in the world – in the Wimbledon final, which she lost to Germany's Sabine Lisicki (ranked 15th).
He also had a €3,000 gamble on Sizing Ireland, but the highly-rated Irish racehorse failed to deliver.
