THERE was a 35pc increase in the number of people who recycled their old TVs last year as a direct result of the digital switchover.

There were some 400,000 TVs recycled in Ireland in 2012, an increase of 100,000 TVs and display monitors compared to the previous year.

Figures from the European Recycling Platform (ERP) show in 2011, 6,000 tonnes of TVs and display monitors were recycled nationally, which equates to 300,000 TVs and display monitors.

Irish people bought more than 550,000 new televisions in the 18-month run-up to the digital switchover last year.

That was over 1,000 new TVs bought each day for the change-over on October 24, 2012.

A further 333,000 digital set top boxes were bought by consumers to adapt their old TVs for the change.
