350,000 cigarettes seized in illegal Greek shipment
CUSTOMS officers have seized more than 350,000 illicit cigarettes after they were shipped into Dublin Airport from Greece.
The haul had a street value of €136,000 and represented a potential loss to the exchequer of €119,000.
The "Palace", "Gold Classic" and "Silver Arrow" brand cigarettes were concealed in cargo shipments, labelled as machine parts and advertising material.
Officers seized part of the haul at the airport's cargo terminal and the rest at a premises in north county Dublin. One man was questioned about the seizure and last night follow-up inquiries were under way.
In a separate operation on Monday, officers at the airport arrested a 27-year-old Moldovan man after an attempt to smuggle 16,000 "L&M" brand cigarettes into the country.
