€3.3m boost for 35 enterprise boards 'too late'

THE Taoiseach was last night accused of acting too late in announcing new funding for county and city enterprise boards.
Mr Cowen and Enterprise Minister Batt O'Keeffe yesterday announced an additional €3.3m for the boards, which the Government claims will lead to the creation of more than 450 jobs.
But Fine Gael's Richard Bruton said the money was only partially making up for slashed budgets, claiming some boards had been starved of funds which would have generated and protected jobs.
Mr Cowen and Mr O'Keeffe made the announcement in Dublin's Grand Canal Dock, where they visited City Canal Cruises, which received €40,000 from Dublin City Enterprise Board.
There are 35 boards providing support for firms employing 10 or fewer staff in the start-up and expansion phases. The €3.3m is in addition to €15m already provided this year.
