A shoal of 32 pilot whales was found dead after they were beached off the Donegal coast off Rutland Island near Burtonport.

The 20-foot whales had been swimming in the area for the past week before being found yesterday morning.

Two veterinary experts from England and Scotland are travelling to the scene.

Dr Simon Berrow of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group said the mass death was one of the biggest in Irish history. "The last highest recording was in 2001 off the coast of Co Kerry when 40 whales died," he said.
