€2m nursing home upgrade a 'failure'

A SPEND of almost €2m by the Health Service Executive (HSE) in upgrading a nursing home has failed to allay concerns of health inspectors.
In a Health Information Quality Authority (HIQA) report into the 120-bed nursing home at St Joseph's Hospital in Ennis, Co Clare, inspectors say the HSE "has made no progress" in tackling the problem.
"The building remained unsuitable and the layout of rooms impacted on the privacy and dignity of residents."
The inspectors noted "inadequate day and dining space, institutional bedroom accommodation and a lack of private space for residents to meet visitors".
Residents in shared bedrooms spent much of the day in bed, or sitting beside their beds.
