€20m religious fund revealed

THE Government confirmed yesterday that it had more than €20m sitting in a bank account contributed by religious orders.
The money is to compensate victims of clerical sexual abuse but legislation is needed to set up a fund to distribute it.
It's more than two years since the publication of the Ryan Report probing the horrific child abuse in institutions run by 18 religious orders.
Education Minister Ruairi Quinn confirmed he would meet both sides soon and hopes to introduce the necessary legislative proposals to set up the fund in the Autumn.
