NEW car sales have plummeted in the first month of the year.
Just 17,299 cars have been sold so far this year, a drop of almost 4,000.
The figures come after an appalling 2012 for the motor industry when sales fell by more than 12pc over the course of the year.
It appears that sales are not improving for January, with a drop of 18pc recorded so far.
The figures come from website Motorcheck.ie, which shows the pressure the new car industry is under.
Almost one in five – or 16pc – of the total sales in January were cars registered yesterday.
Volkswagen is the most popular brand, with 12.5pc of all sales. It is followed by Toyota and Ford. The most popular car sold is the Ford Focus.
