2,000 jobs go in black day for the economy
MORE than 2,000 workers face losing their jobs after grim announcements by Ulster Bank and Hewlett Packard.
Both companies announced hundreds of job losses yesterday, with the bank expected to lay off as many as 1,800 staff and shut up to 40 branches.
And the bank has threatened to step up its efforts to repossess homes from mortgage holders in arrears.
Meanwhile, up to 280 job losses were announced by Hewlett Packard.
The company said employees based at a call centre in Sandyford in Dublin had been notified of the decision to let go 220 staff and 60 contractors.
