THE seafood processing industry has received a major boost with the creation of 158 jobs over the next three years.

Minister for Agriculture, Marine and Food Simon Coveney revealed yesterday that 18 companies have been approved for grant aid of €1.7m.

He also announced a pilot jobs initiative for Killybegs in Donegal to create an additional 250 jobs by 2014.

Mr Coveney added that there needs to be more "joined-up thinking" by State agencies in the region if its potential was to be achieved.

But the jobs announcements came as unions raised concerns with the Government about 130 jobs that are being outsourced at Vodafone.

General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions David Begg said he expressed serious concern to Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton at the highly profitable company's plans to "export" jobs to India and Egypt at a time of record unemployment.
