THE hospital worst hit by overcrowding in its A&E unit last week is hoping the opening of a new unit will bring some respite for patients from today.
Cork University Hospital, which had 48 patients on trolleys last week, is opening the doors of a new €1.4m 23-bed acute medical unit. Acutely ill patients, who only need to be in hospital for around 48 hours, can be transferred from its main emergency department to free up vital space.
The new unit will also take referrals from GPs from February 7.
