14 year sentence for father who raped son

A father of six was today sentenced to 14 years, 18 months of which have been suspended, for the systemic sexual abuse of his eldest son.

The now 20-year-old victim said "yes" as the convicted sex offender was sentenced for 47 charges of anal rape, oral rape and sexual assault on the boy over a three-year period.

Mr Justice Barry White, at Dublin's Central Criminal Court, said the abuse was an appalling breach of trust on an innocent and vulnerable child.

"Your offences are more reprehensible because of the position you enjoyed in the family," the judge told the 52-year-old father.

"You were head of the family and in a dominant position."

Outside the court the victim said he was happy with the sentence but had hoped his father would be jailed for life.

"It's all over now," he added.

The boy's mother was jailed for seven years last year for incest, abuse and neglect of her children.

The family cannot be named for legal reasons.
