1,100 hospital beds closed

More than 1,100 beds are closed in hospitals around the country as emergency overcrowding escalates, it emerged yesterday.

The Health Service Executive's (HSE) latest performance report shows that 834 were closed due to cost-cutting moves by hospitals.

Others are closed for infection control or for refurbishment and maintenance.

Another 603 beds are occupied by patients who are ready to be discharged but have nowhere to go.

There are 334 beds shut in the HSE West, which has was severely over budget earlier this year.
