€102k tobacco haul uncovered in tea bags
CUSTOMS officers who opened a consignment of tea bags found that it contained a quarter tonne of 'roll-your-own' tobacco.
The haul was discovered when officers intercepted a van in Dublin's north city.
It had an estimated retail value of €102,000 and represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of €72,000.
The search was part of an operation against a smuggling and distribution gang based in the capital. The tobacco shipment had originated in China, officers said last night. One man was questioned about the seizure and later released. A file will now be prepared for the DPP, who will determine if criminal charges should be brought.
Customs appealed for information about illegal cigarettes or tobacco. They can be contacted in confidence on 1800 295 295.
