1,000 students hit by closure of training college

MORE than 1,000 students and trainees may be affected by the closure of a private training centre which collected up to €1m in course fees from State agencies in recent years.

A notice on the door at the Empower Learning Ltd college in Kilkenny city confirmed that it had ceased trading.

Investigations have already been mounted by the gardai and accreditation body Skillnets into the centre's practices.

The probes centre on allegations of fake certification, as well as claims that courses were funded at the training centre but never delivered.

Accreditation agency FETAC were yesterday trying to gain access to the college to secure students' records but had not been successful.

FETAC manager Stanley McHugh said they had last had contact from Empower managing director Stephen Doran on Sunday. Mr Doran had indicated the company was willing to hand over their assessment and enrolment records.
