100 new jobs in Facebook expansion

New positions at Facebook's European headquarters in Dublin will range across ICT, sales and human resources

Social network giant Facebook is to create 100 jobs in Dublin.

The new positions at the company's European headquarters will range across ICT, sales and human resources.

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said ICT (information and communication technology) in particular was a key sector targeted in the Government's Action Plan for Jobs.

"Today's announcement of a significant expansion by one of the biggest companies on the internet, with the creation of 100 high-end jobs, is a major endorsement of the tech environment in Dublin and further confirmation of our city's status as the internet capital of Europe," Mr Bruton said.

"This represents a significant economic commitment to Ireland by Facebook and I wish them every success with their operations here."

Facebook already employs 400 people at its international base in Dublin's Docklands area. Bosses have started the recruitment process by advertising the new positions on the company's online notice board.

Acting head of office at Facebook Ireland Gareth Lambe said the company originally chose Ireland as its European hub because of the country's great tech talent.

"Today's announcement means we will be expanding our workforce across multiple disciplines such as user operations, safety and advertising," Mr Lambe said.

"These jobs, which reflect growth in markets across Europe but also the Middle East and Africa, mean we will not only be recruiting from the local economy but supporting local businesses by increasing our footprint."

Meanwhile, Barry O'Leary, chief executive of IDA Ireland - the body responsible for attracting direct foreign investment - said social media remains a strategic industry for Ireland. He said Facebook's latest expansion illustrates how important the company is to the digital media cluster developed in the country over recent years.
