Two men arrested after they stormed post office armed with handgun and hammer

Gardai intercepted the two men as they made their getaway on a motorcycle on the M6.

Gardai have arrested two men following an attempted armed robbery on a post office in Clonsilla earlier today.

At around 10.20 a.m. two men armed with a handgun and a hammer entered a post office on the Clonsilla Road in Dublin.

They threatened and held up staff before leaving the scene empty-handed on a motorcycle.

Following a search operation members of the Garda Traffic Corps and Regional Support Unit intercepted a motorcycle and arrested two males on the M6 near Kilbeggan Co. Westmeath shortly before 11 am.

Both men, who in their 20s, are currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, at Blanchardstown Garda Station.

The two men are expected to appear before Blanchardstown District Court in the morning.
