Miley Cyrus' 10 most talked about moments
Miley Cyrus has really changed from her Hannah Montana days
Miley Cyrus is no stranger to the spotlight, having been in the limelight since her early teens with the successful Disney show Hannah Montana.
She has grown up before our eyes but maybe not in quite the right way. More famous now for her on stage antics than her talent, many wonder if Miley will follow the dark path of many former Disney child stars. But don't take our word for it, we have put together a list of Miley's most controversial moments so far so you can judge for yourself:
1. Vanity Fair Cover (2008)
Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz got her hands on Miley Cyrus in 2008 and started off the ream of controversies with a risqué photo shoot. The 15-year-old Miley was photographed with messy hair and make-up and wearing nothing but a bedsheet. Her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, also features in the shoot making the whole thing a lot more uncomfortable for everyone.
2. Pole dancing at the Teen choice awards
At the tender age of 16 Miley began to show her wild side when she pole danced at the Teen Choice Awards. After winning 6 awards, all chosen by her peers, she acted much older than her age as she raunchily danced with a pole.
3. The Chop
In 2012 Miley and her stylist took a scissors to her locks. She posted the transformation on Instragram with the words “Bye bun! Stay tuned!” Two hours later she posted pictures of the choppy platinum pixie style we have all come to know, if not love.
Though it is clear Miley didn’t invent twerking she certainly did popularise it. She first did the dance move in a self made video of ‘Wop’, the song by Florida rapper J. Dash. Miley dances to the song dressed in a unicorn onesie. Since then she has taken twerking to heart with videos of her twerking on stage with a midget and a burqua clad alien going viral.
5. Wrecking Ball Video
Miley broke down all barriers with her 2013 hit ‘Wrecking Ball’ (if you’ll pardon the pun). The song is a catchy tune but it was the music video that blew everyone away. Miley appeared naked throughout the video sitting on a wrecking ball and suggestively licking a sledge hammer. The song has 600 million views on YouTube and even pays homage to Sinead O’Connor.
6. Lighting up on stage at the EMA's
It seems staying out of the limelight at awards ceremonies is difficult for Miley. After winning an award at the 2013 European Music Awards for the video for Wrecking Ball she attempted to fit the award into her bag, then pulled out a rolled up cigarette (joint?) and lit up on stage. The audience was shocked as were many internet commenters and the clip was even edited out of the show for American audiences.
7. The Sinead O’Connor letters
On the back of Wrecking ball Sinead O’Connor wrote an open letter to Miley where she told her she was being ‘pimped’ by the music industry and talked about how she was ‘concerned’ for her. Miley then responded by posting a screencap of some of Sinead O’Connor’s tweets from an old account with the caption:
‘Before Amanda Bynes…. There was….’
8. Suggestive photos with Terry Richardson
Miley isn’t Miley when she isn’t naked so she teamed up with photographer Terry Richardson to basically take some porn shots of the young singer. There is very little left to the imagination in the photos. To make the shots worse, since then allegations of sexual assault have been made against Richardson by models who have worked with him.
9. Grinding on Robin Thicke at the VMA’s.
Finally cementing her ‘Bad Girl’ image Miley grinded suggestively on married singer Robin Thicke during VMA performance of We Cant Stop/Blurred Lines. The song had raised eyebrows itself with its hints at sexual assault but Miley’s suggestive dancing and her Nude coloured PVC hot pants and boob-tube took the biscuit.
10. Bangerz tour
Miley seems to be making it a personal challenge to make each show in the Bangerz tour more controversial than the last. The tour opened in Vancouver, Canada with an almost X-rated dance routine where Miley grabbed her crotch, wore high waisted leotards and posed suggestively. Since then she has included a cannabis leaf covered leotard, called audience members ‘sluts’ and mimed oral sex on a blow up doll.
