She complained about the lack of female fist-fighting and gun-toting on the set of Love/Hate.
So actress Charlie Murphy was delighted when she got the opportunity to kick ass while filming Norseman: A Viking Saga.
“I play a Scottish princess captured by Vikings,” the 26-year-old actress said. “I got to play with crossbows and do lots of stunts. It was great craic.”
The film was shot in South Africa and Charlie says she was blown away by the landscape.
“It finished about a month ago. Being over in South Africa was an amazing experience,” she said.
“So much movie work is being done over there at the moment. It's such a beautiful landscape.”
The gritty and gruesome show hopes to tap into the success of other fantasy dramas such as Game of Thrones.
The IFTA award-winning actress is currently in Yorkshire shooting BBC1 drama Happy Valley. The series was written by Last Tango in Halifax writer Sally Wainwright who describes the series as “Juliet Bravo meets Fargo”.
“I play the daughter of a very affluent self-made businessman and I get kidnapped for ransom. So it's not a rom-com,” she joked.
Charlie has had leading roles in popular series such as Love/ Hate and The Village but says she's is hardly ever recognised.
“I spent most of my time on a plane between Ireland and England so I never really see anyone,” she said.
The Wexford native also has a role in Quirke which will air in January 2014. “I had one tiny scene with Gabriel Byrne and he was an absolute sweetheart,” she said.
“I play a 1950s housewife, struggling with drug problems - which Ireland saw a surge of at that time.
“So my character kind of gets caught in a dark place. I've played so many different characters. They always seem to be veering on the dark side, but I enjoy that too.”
