Scarlett gets Republicans in a sweat
SCARLETT Johansson sure knows how to get the Republican candidates hot under the collar: just tease them about their sense of style, or -- more to the point -- their lack thereof.
During a Manhattan Democratic fundraiser that she co-hosted with Vogue editor Anna Wintour on Tuesday night, the actress rubbished a recent Republican Party attack suggesting the fashion flock's high-profile support of Obama's re-election campaign reflects his elitist tendencies (which some RNC genius quaintly described, in a press release, using the word "ritzy").
"Why would they say that? They are all so unfashionable ... let them say what they want!" the 27-year-old laughed as party-goers such as Karolina Kurkova, Diane Von Furstenberg, Tory Burch, Chanel Iman and Alexander Wang shopped for Obama-branded "Runway To Win" merchandise like Thakoon scarves and Derek Lam totes (priced at $95 and $75 respectively -- well below the $100 Rick Santorum was asking for copies of his "signature" sweater vests, which Johansson described as "sad").
She added, "My Dad wore them, and, I mean, they're charming for family photos I guess, and dinner with the grandparents. I think there's an ironic way to wear a sweater vest but other than that I'm not sure!"
Johansson, a high-profile 2008 Obama supporter, steered well clear of questions about her We Bought a Zoo co-star Matt Damon, who has been very vocal about his disillusionment with the president's performance, but did admit a November victory would require a lot of repair work.
"I understand that people are upset, they want change and they want it now," she told reporters. "And change takes time. Not only does it take time, but people have to be active, you have to participate."
Former Obama aide Reggie Love, who was also at the fundraiser, declined to participate in the fashion debate but did admit the president taught him everything he knows about neckwear. "I will tell you, the guy taught me how to tie a very professional knot," he said, pointing to his tie before clarifying: "It's not the knot, it's the dimple." Cute.
No courting for Courteney
HAS Courteney Cox been reading Sinead O'Connor's blog?
The Cougar Town actress, 47, told radio shock-jock Howard Stern and his listeners that she hasn't had sex since she split with husband David Arquette in 2010.
"I've not had a man since David ... No guy's asked me out. I'm not saying I'm not ready to have a make-out session, it just makes me nervous. I don't like to go out in general," Cox, for reasons unknown, revealed.
And she didn't stop there. "I have sexual feelings, there's ways to deal with that," she said, adding, "It's time for me to get out there. It's not easy to meet people. They don't call me." Funny that.
Beyonce, Jay-Z's true Blue move
NEWS that Beyonce and Jay-Z applied to the US Patent and Trademark Office on January 26 in a bid to officially trademark the name of their daughter "Blue Ivy" prompted a lot of eye-rolling and brand extension speculation.
But as it turns out, Mr and Mrs Carter only made the legal move after they learned that two applications to trademark their daughter's name had been made -- and turned down -- since she was born on January 7.
The first request, made by a fashion designer named Joseph Mbeh on January 11, was intended for a collection of children's dresses, skirts and underwear. The second, made on January 20, was for a line of fragrances.
While it seems unlikely that the California-based dudes who named a new strain of marijuana after the baby asked anyone's permission, it sounds like the owners of a small clothing store in Wisconsin, trademarked "The Blue Ivy" early in 2011, may be in for a rather large windfall.
