HSE urges medics to give more flu vaccines as virus death toll hits five
Health officials are concerned that more people could die after the flu virus claimed the lives of five people.
The HSE also urged medical professionals to administer antiviral vaccinations following a 58 per cent increase in the amount of people believed to have been infected in a single week.
The number of reported cases of the illness increased from 20.5 to 32.4 per 100,000 this week, far surpassing the HSE's accepted ‘threshold level' of 21.
Some 82 people have been hospitalised after falling victim to the virus since the beginning of the flu season last October, with 26 recorded this week alone.
