Homecoming queen: Katie Taylor gets rapturous applause at Dublin airport
Cheers and rapturous applause could be heard across the arrivals area in Dublin Airport today as Katie Taylor made her triumphant return following her win at the Women's European Boxing Championships finals in Bucharest today.
Taylor struck gold once again, beating French rival Estelle Mossley during four intense rounds, making Saturday’s victory her sixth European win in a row.
Despite having already beat Mossley back in July at the European Union final, Taylor said she wasn’t taking anything for granted ahead of the game “I knew it would be a close fight” she said “there’s never going to be an easy fight in the European final.”
The Bray native remains humble in her achievements, crediting her family, religious beliefs and the support of other athletes as the reason for her success.
Before heading to her grandmother’s house for a well deserved break, Taylor posed for pictures and signed autographs for delighted young fans.
Among those was eight year old Grace, daughter of Fergal Carruth, Chief Executive of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association. “I’d be delighted if Grace developed an interest in boxing one day” Fergal told the Irish Independent. “It’s an excellent mode of self defence and a great discipline.” he added.
