Bill O’Herlihy launches the DSPCA’s free online will drafting service with Glenda, an eight-week-old Chihuahua cross.

AN animal charity is offering people the chance to organise their will free of charge in exchange for a €500 bequest to the organisation upon their death.

The Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) teamed up with solicitor Susan Cosgrove, who will work pro bono to help run the online drafting service.

The system will operate on a Q&A basis and only the person making the will and the solicitor will have access to the answers submitted.

The chief executive of the DSPCA, Brian Gillen, said the charity has in the past received more than €300,000 a year in bequests from supporters.

However, an influx of animals in the last 12 months has forced the organisation to think of innovative new ways of creating income.

Mr Gillen said they were close to rehousing their 1,000th animal so far in 2014, which was a 20pc increase on the same time last year.
