Manchester United are expected to pursue moves for the AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong and the Ajax defender Daley Blind once the signing of Angel di María has been secured.
United hope to seal a £60 million British record transfer for Di Maria within the next 48 hours after the Argentina winger confirmed to Carlo Ancelotti, his Real Madrid coach, that he is leaving the European champions.
Arturo Vidal, the Juventus midfielder, is also a target, but the Italian champions aim to resist offers for the Chile international.
Van Gaal is keen on De Jong, who impressed under his coaching for the Holland national team at the World Cup. An £8m move for the former Manchester City midfielder De Jong is regarded by Van Gaal as a contingency plan should a bid for Vidal fail, with the manager acknowledging the need for midfield reinforcements.
Blind is another favourite of Van Gaal's from his time in charge of Holland, and can play across a range of defensive and midfield positions.
Danny Welbeck has been told he can leave Old Trafford, with Javier Hernandez, Anderson, Shinji Kagawa and Tom Cleverley also facing uncertain futures at the club.
