CHAOS reigns in the Ireland camp with the news that Glenn Whelan has been ruled of tonight's World Cup qualifier against Sweden, opening the door for James McCarthy to slot into midfield alongside surprise pick Paul Green.
And Robbie Brady, the subject of a bizarre series of events yesterday, will not find out until just before kick-off time whether Giovanni Trapattoni trusts him enough to start him against Sweden after he was first named in the team and then withdrawn late last night.
Whelan has been a minor injury doubt all week after he was substituted at half-time during Stoke’s 0-0 draw with West Brom but the ankle knock he sustained has clearly deteriorated in the last 24 hours.
However, it was not possible to confirm that McCarthy will start in his place alongside Green and it could be that Trapattoni will leave that decision until the last moment.
Brady too must bite his nails and wait until Trapattoni finally makes up his mind about the Hull City wingers' ability to cope with the mental challenge of a big World Cup qualifier.
