Achill Coastguard rescues woman after car plunges into river

A female driver had a lucky escape when she was rescued from a car which plunged into a river on Achill Island.

Achilll Island coastguard received a call alerting them to vehicle which had come off the road near Keel Lake yesterday around midday.

Members of Achill Island coastguard came to the woman’s rescue within minutes of her car coming off the road.

When they reached the scene of the crash, the vehicle was already fully submerged and was filling with water.

They rescued the woman from the vehicle and gave her first aid.

A statement issued by Achill Island Coast Guard on its Facebook page praised the first respondents' actions.

"Undoubtedly the quick thinking reactions of the first Coast Guard crew on scene prevented a life threatening situation ending in a real tragedy.

"Well done to all involved, you are a credit to not only [to] yourselves, but the Irish Coast Guard."

The woman's daughter commented on the Facebook post, thanking the Coast Guard for their actions.

“My mother is safe and well tonight. We cannot thank the Achill rescue services enough.”
