Still no alerts on alcohol for mums-to-be

Monday August 25 2008

THE drinks industry promised in October last year to put health warnings for pregnant women on alcohol products.

But as of yet there is no sign of the warnings appearing, according to Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinness.

Speaking at the launch of a new information booklet for pregnant women at Our Lady of Lourdes, Drogheda, she said it will now be next year before legislation is in place to make these warnings mandatory.

Women who drink while pregnant are putting their unborn baby at risk of brain damage and the advice is to avoid it completely.
