Heads up on ways to beat dandruff

Monday April 21 2008

Men suffer from dandruff more than women and it mainly strikes in people's twenties and thirties.

It is the most common condition affecting the scalp.

The skin cells on the scalp are constantly renewing and the old cells get pushed to the surface by the new ones.

The good news is that it usually responds very well to treatment -- but it can return.

Dandruff responds well to the use of medicated or anti-fungal (anti-yeast) shampoos and, thankfully, there are plenty to choose from.

However, it is advised you experiment with different types until you find the best one that works or you.

Dandruff shampoos are usually classified according to which active ingredients they contain.

n The dandruff shampoo should be massaged into your scalp and left on for 3-5 minutes before being thoroughly rinsed.

n Your hair and scalp should then be shampooed using the shampoo 1-2 times a week.

n Your dandruff should improve within a few weeks of starting treatment, but is likely to reoccur if you stop the treatment.

n Additional treatment for seborrhoeic dermatitis can help control symptoms of dandruff but cannot cure the condition.

n Treatments include topical corticosteroids (applied to the scalp) to reduce inflammation.

n It may also involved taking antibiotics if your scalp becomes infected.
