Health bits: Alzheimer's risk reduced by activities
Monday March 15 2010
Elderly people with a strong sense of purpose in life have a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
The finding comes from research that assessed the outlook on life in 900 elderly people, following them for several years to see which of them developed cognitive problems. The study was published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
It supports earlier studies showing that older people who try to remain active by doing crosswords, etc, may reduce their chances of getting the disease, but it is no guarantee.
