Smoking mums and hyperactivity

By Eilish O'Regan

Monday December 07 2009

Smoking during pregnancy significantly increases the mother's risk of having a child with behavioural problems.

The problems, like temper, fighting and bullying of other children, emerged in children as young as three years of age, the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health reported.

The sons of light smokers (fewer than 10 cigarettes a day during pregnancy) were almost 80pc more likely to have hyperactivity-attention deficit disorders.
