Health bits: Children are hardest hit by swine flu

By Eilish O'Regan

Monday March 01 2010

Nearly one in 10 of patients with swine flu who were admitted to hospital since the start of the outbreak were serious enough to be admitted to intensive care.

The age group most likely to be hospitalised were children under five years and 457 (43pc) of all hospitalised cases had an existing medical condition.

Among those whose swine flu was confirmed in a laboratory, as opposed to through symptoms alone, women slightly outnumbered men, making up 53pc of cases.
