€1.8m blood safety plan is scrapped
A new computer system, which cost €1.8m in a bid to improve safety and infection control at the country's blood bank, is to be abandoned.
The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) said yesterday it was scrapping the system, admitting the decision was "very embarrassing".
IBTS chief executive Andrew Kelly said it was decided to install the system three years ago to improve the safety and tracking of blood supplies.
However, it became embroiled in difficulties and never went live. The decision to abandon it means about €729,000 will have to be written off.
