Natasha Richardson (right) lost her life in March 2009 as a result of a fall on the beginner's slope at the Mont Tremblant resort (below) in Quebec. The 45-year-old felt fine after the fall and initially refused medical attention.

In the same month, a German state governor, Dieter Althaus, was convicted of negligent homicide due to the death of a woman with whom he collided on an Austrian ski slope in January of that year.
Althaus, who suffered head injuries, couldn't remember exactly what happened during the incident but investigators said he had strayed onto the wrong slope and skied in the wrong direction.
He collided at high speed with a Slovak woman called Beata Christandl. Significantly, Althaus had been wearing a ski helmet and survived his injuries while Christandl did not.
Althaus was given a fine and ordered to pay damages to the victim's husband. He later decided to resign from politics.
