A warm quilt is a comfort blanket for this family

THE last few months have been a nightmare for Shirley Keenan and her two young children.
Although a quilt may seem like a relatively small thing in the face of the catastrophe that forced them out of their Athlone home and into temporary accommodation, it's a comfort, says Shirley, who received the colourful hand-made quilt though the local flood relief committee.
"That quilt was a nice gesture -- it's something that we'll keep until we get back into the house," she says.
"The kids and myself all love it -- it brings a bit of warmth and homeliness into the rented house."
The family could certainly do with a bit of comfort and warmth. On November 19, water flooded the road outside Shirley's home at Deerpark Road, Athlone, before starting to creep up her drive.
"It started outside my house. Then it crossed the drive and came right in through the front door," recalls the 39-year-old FAS clerical officer.
"The whole bottom of the house was destroyed," she recalls. "We had to move out overnight. There was thousands of euro worth of damage done."
