Sort nutrition before lambing
Ewes that are due to start lambing in early January are now entering the critical last third of pregnancy. Between now and lambing, it is a critical time to get nutrition and some routine healthcare issues sorted if lambing is to go smoothly.
Farmers reap cash reward as prices rise yet again
'Good things come to those who wait' is a line we have often heard and, indeed, over the weekend it would have been difficult to argue with this.
Trade strong for culls and stores
Trade continued strong at the marts this week, particularly for cull ewe and store lambs.
Sheep Ireland completes CPT
Sheep Ireland recently completed the first ever central progeny test programme (CPT) for sheep in Ireland.
Knowing grass patterns and ewe needs is key for spring
Ireland has a climate that allows it to grow grass for most of the year. For pasture-based production systems, this gives us a competitive advantage over other European countries. The often used phrase that 'grass is the cheapest feed' is well accepted. But how do we manage a grass crop that produces excess in summer and very little at the shoulders of the year?
Live trade drives 10c/kg quote rise
I suppose when, in the space of 12 hours, we see Simon Cowell spare the Grimes twins on X Factor and then we hear an admission by our Taoiseach that he "failed on the public sector overhaul", you can expect to hear anything for the rest of the day.
Prices lift as demand increases for stores
There was a welcome lift in prices at the sheep marts this week as the cull ewe trade remained strong while demand for quality stores also increased.
Pleasant surprise as quotes up 5c/kg
Always expect the unexpected -- Cratloe wins the Clare senior hurling final, the Brefmeistro survives another week on The Apprentice (unless Bill fired him last night) and the bishops are not overly happy about thousands flocking to Knock.
Store lamb trade liveliest this year
Store lambs continued to be the big sellers in the marts this week with one mart reporting its liveliest store lamb trade so far this year.
Liver fluke -- it's yet another year of high infection levels
Last year was possibly one of the worst years for liver fluke infection. Data from the Regional Veterinary Laboratories -- Surveillance Report 2008 showed that deaths due to acute and chronic fasciolosis accounted for 20.5pc of diagnosed causes of death in adult sheep. Therefore, liver fluke is by a long shot the biggest cause of death in sheep and that's only looking at the dead ones.

• Kevin Myers: Armistice Day poppycock threatens our free speech
They started wearing the poppy on the BBC last week, midway through October, nearly a month before Armistice Day. They also ambushed the British National Party (BNP) leader Nick Griffin.
• Ian O'Doherty: All hail Xenu. Or something
The Cult of Scientology is having a really, really bad week. They have been found guilty of fraud in France, and slapped with a large fine -- although given how expert they are at bilking money from the gullible morons who buy into their claptrap, they shouldn't have any problem raising it.
