Leopardstown hosts Expo
The Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association's flagship event, the ITBA Expo, will take place at Leopardstown Racecourse from Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25.
The Expo, the only one of its kind in Ireland this year, will provide exhibitors with the perfect platform to showcase and sell their products to the industry.
The highlight of the event will be the International Breeding and Racing Forum, which takes place on the Friday evening at 6pm.
The Hamdan Al Maktoum-raced Watar has been retired to stud at Dermot Day's Moortown Stud in Co Wexford.
Trained by Freddy Head, the son of Marju won four races in France and €286,300 in prize money. Watar was rated the top French three-year-old in the World Thoroughbred Rankings (Extended) and the second top weight to Conduit in the overall European section.
Tipperary equestrian application company Grey Horse Apps has been shortlisted for the 2011 'Best App Ever' Awards.
The 'Save a horse' app, created by Grey Horse Apps to support the work of Irish Horse Welfare Trust, Ireland's horse charity, has been shortlisted from more than 7,240 app nominations.
The app contains 17 topics including information about Ireland's only dedicated equine charity, videos, volunteering opportunities and fundraising.
IFA horse chairman James Murphy has welcomed new thoroughbred foal levy rates and bands, saying the new charges would go some way to addressing the concerns of breeders.
However, he added that the problem would only be totally resolved when a flat-rate levy based on the actual nomination fee was introduced. He also called for foal levy funds to be ring-fenced solely for the purpose of advancing the filly in the sales ring, on the racecourse and at point-to-point events.
