Elite cow herd needs a home

Tuesday January 31 2012

The search has begun for a new home for the next generation herd of elite cows that Teagasc is starting to assemble.

The State body stepped into the breach when no suitable funding for the €1m project could be sourced. However, the loss of the Ballydague research farm, following the termination of the lease last month, has reduced the research area available to Teagasc's dairy researchers by 25pc.

The 245ac farm reverts back to the control of the family of Agricultural Trust chairman, Paddy O'Keeffe. Teagasc's head of livestock research, Padraig French, said that a decision would be made on a new home for the herd over the next month.
