'Bank for farmers' sought by Gowing
Macra President Michael Gowing has called for the setting up of a new financial institution to open up credit lines for young farmers.
Addressing delegates in his inaugural speech at Macra's annual general meeting in Wicklow on Saturday, Mr Gowing said the financial institutions that existed at present were failing to deliver to farmers. "Looking at our financial institutions, we can see how they are failing to live up to their endless promises," Mr Gowing said.
"This can no longer be tolerated. There is a genuine need for credit lines and a new financial institution now appears to be the only option left. Such an institution would have to deliver for the rural people of Ireland, particularly the younger generation -- the innocent bystanders to the current mess.
"This may appear to be radical for some, but needs must, and never have our needs been so great. This concept must be explored and not left sitting on the 'ideas shelf'," he said.
The new president noted that in the past when the agricultural sector had difficulties in securing insurance, FBD was set up out of necessity.
He was also highly critical of the Government and said Macra's role now was as important as it had been through the difficult years when the organisation was founded 65 years ago. He called on members to make their voices heard.
"Our elected representatives have promised much in recent times, but delivered little other than increasing the burden on the most vulnerable in society.
"How much longer can we in Macra let this continue? We, the young people of rural Ireland, know that we are not the cause of the country's current troubles, but the Government is continuously penalising us and supporting the big players," he said.
The 32nd national president conceded that he came into office at a difficult time. However, he called on members to stand together and use all opportunities that presented themselves to maximise the effectiveness of their work.
"We, the voluntary sector of rural Ireland, won't be found wanting," he said.
