Meet nutritional needs of every class of stock
After last week's article on the feeding value of silage, I want to discuss appropriate feeding programmes for various classes of stock.
Heifer prices up but trade still remains steady for bullocks
Cattle prices remained at last week's levels at best in the marts this week with trade even quieter still, some marts report. Numbers were also back in many cases.
Plants resist pre Christmas lift
Oh for beef farmers to be in a position like our HSE chief executive Brendan Drumm, wondering which charity to give his €70,000 to.
How good is your silage?
The quality of silage is likely to fall into two broad categories this year. Crops harvested by mid-June should be quite good, and the rest harvested in difficult conditions or in late summer/ autumn could be well below average. This might mean that there is little "average" silage this year, in the sense of long-term average-quality silage.
Bargain to boost offered quotes
Last Tuesday's IFA conference at the RDS was well-organised, interesting and challenging with lots of information, some well-intentioned advice and the odd gem that will definitely be right up there at the end of the year when the awards are being announced for Understatement of the Year.
Marts advise farmers to creep feed to help stock
The bad weather has continued to take its toll on animals offered for sale at the marts, with one mart manager advising customers to creep feed before hand.
Housing will be critical time for parasite control
The change to much wetter weather has resulted in a lot of cattle being housed in the past week. This wet, mild weather is not the best condition for housing cattle, especially weanlings.
Quality lots hold steady at marts
There was no great shift in prices at the country's marts this week with quality lots at best maintaining while plainer types came under pressure.
Beef needs new driver
Whatever about NAMA, I think it is the beef industry that requires the SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) at the moment.
Preparing stock for the winter, and the land for spring grazing
The transition from summer to winter has come very suddenly this year. The good weather extended the summer to late October -- but, with the change last week, the weather has now caught up with the calendar.

• Kevin Myers: Armistice Day poppycock threatens our free speech
They started wearing the poppy on the BBC last week, midway through October, nearly a month before Armistice Day. They also ambushed the British National Party (BNP) leader Nick Griffin.
• Ian O'Doherty: All hail Xenu. Or something
The Cult of Scientology is having a really, really bad week. They have been found guilty of fraud in France, and slapped with a large fine -- although given how expert they are at bilking money from the gullible morons who buy into their claptrap, they shouldn't have any problem raising it.
