The first ladies
Just as Grainne Seoige, Kathryn Thomas and Miriam O'Callaghan feature heavily at photo calls to announce season schedules, three young women won the hearts of viewers when RTE television first aired in 1961.
Kathleen Watkins, who went on to marry Gay Byrne, Nuala Donnelly and Marie O'Sullivan were the first three women to appear on the station as continuity announcers and were the only ones who could eclipse newscaster Charles Mitchell.
The trio also travelled around the country for a series called ‘Meet the People’ and during public appearances, it has been reported that they were mobbed by hordes of people hoping to hear their oft-uttered catchphrase: “We apologise for the break in transmission. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.”
