Our first drama as good as 'Love/Hate' – TV3
TV3's first foray into television drama could be every bit as successful as RTE's 'Love/Hate', the station has boldly predicted.
No pressure there, then.
Clearly not lacking in new year optimism, the station has set the bar very high for its first ever drama production, 'Deception', which premieres next week.
The six-part series, which was produced in conjunction with, and partly funded by, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), was shot entirely in Galway last year.
According to a TV3 spokeswoman, 'Deception' could prove as successful as 'Love/Hate'.
"We have to remember that 'Love/Hate' wasn't well known in the first series. Yes, it's big now, but it wasn't as huge in the beginning.
"We have high hopes for this production – it's a pilot soap and the biggest thing we've ever done."
Actress Leigh Arnold also believes that it will strike a chord with audiences due to its topical nature.
"It's obviously not the same content as 'Love/Hate', but 'Deception' still deals with current issues, and in a way, it'll have a wider audience because everyone can relate and identify with the characters and situations."
Approximately €1.3m was spent on the series, which follows the lives of the inhabitants of Benton Wood Housing Estate.
The season opener includes a home repossession and a murder.
Leading the way is Arnold, whose character Caitriona French begins to see her glamorous life crumble when she returns from a cosmetic surgery trip overseas.
A string of new and returning series will feature on Irish television screens this month, with Kathryn Thomas appearing in two slots on RTE One with both 'The Voice' and 'Operation Transformation'.
The second instalment of talent competition 'The Voice' will begin this Sunday at 6.30pm. Audiences will see one change to the coaching line-up, with British artist Jamelia replacing Brian Kennedy to join Sharon Corr and Westlife singer Kian Egan on the panel.
Hit dieting show 'Operation Transformation' will begin its run on Tuesday, January 8.
Presenter Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain and Joe Lindsay have taken the helm of RTE travel review programme 'Getaways'.
The opening episode, on RTE One tonight at 7pm, looks at the windy city of Chicago.
