Nicky Byrne on abusive tweets from 2FM listeners: 'It's like water off a duck's back'
RTE star Nicky Byrne (34) has been getting hate messages on Twitter about his new 2fm radio gig.
But he has insisted that it's all water off a duck's back and the comments don't bother him in the slightest.
This week, he was targeted on the social networking site by one particular listener who sent him an abusive message.
"Nicky Byrne has his own show on 2fm. He is USELESS. Indicative of the "get famous names with f**k all radio talent" trend," they said.
Obviously, taking it in his stride, Nicky appeared to brush off the nasty comment by asking the Tweeter if he was having a bad day.
Other posters sent Nicky messages of support and urged him to "ignore the trolls".
And the Dublin star told the Herald that he doesn't take any of the remarks too seriously and it's all part of the job.
"Sometimes they annoy me and sometimes they don't. The particular guy didn't annoy me. He was obviously just having a bad day so I just called him out in it," he said.
"We've been lucky enough in that the feedback we've been getting has been generally really positive."
Two weeks ago he started his new 2fm show with Jenny Greene. Running from 11am-1pm, it has been meeting all the right notes with listeners, who have been giving it the big thumbs-up.
Nicky has also been using his showbiz contacts to interview various celebrities on his show, including Lily Allen, Dermot O'Leary, Ellie Goulding and The Wanted.
He also hit the headlines in his first week by dishing out thousands of euros in cash.
On his third day on the job, Nicky gave €1,000 to two listeners after they mistakenly texted 2fm to respond to a competition being run on Today FM.
Clearly determined to make a big impact during his first week in the job, listeners heard Nicky calling up a listener named Liam from Buncrana.
"You entered a competition on a national rival radio station to win a grand in cash, Is that right? Well, let me tell you, Liam, let there be no confusion. Here's a grand in cash from us at 2fm," he said.
