What is it with these Danes? First they come up with The Killing, demonstrating that an elaborate whodunnit can be as much about character and psychology as about plot twists.
And now from the same makers there's Borgen (BBC4), proving that political intrigue can be just as exciting as heinous crime.
Politics, as it happened, also featured prominently in The Killing, but was its weakest component, so I wasn't expecting a lot from Borgen (which translates as The Fort), but I was hooked right from the start.
As with Sarah Lund in the acclaimed crime series, a woman is the central character here, too -- a principled but ambitious party leader played with wit and warmth by Sidse Babett Knudsen (pictured). What effect, though, will newly acquired power have on her?
If you watched last Saturday night's first instalment, you'll certainly want to know the answer. If you didn't, you don't know what you're missing.
