RTE IS to permanently replace presenter Maxi in the early-morning slot on Radio 1.

The 61-year-old showbiz veteran, who has been on sick leave from the station since October, will be replaced by Shay Byrne.

He will take over the Risin' Time slot, which airs from 5.30am to 7am each weekday.

Last November RTE said Maxi, real name Irene McCoubrey, was on “extended leave” from the station but claimed she would return to the airwaves in 2011.

“Maxi had a virus earlier in the year and she is taking further time out until she feels 100pc. We have no definite return date as yet, however we anticipate at this stage it will be the new year,” RTE said.

However, RTE sources said last night that the former Eurovision star would not be returning.
